Hello, and welcome to the Autistic Muse, I’m Dylan, and…
Wait, this isn’t a game show - it’s a blog. Guess I started a bit too enthusiastically. In any case, though, welcome. I intend to share a few things regarding how this came to be, and what I intend to share here.
Why I am here?
I have been here for quite a while perusing the site after seeing an account called Prompts from the Void pop up in my feed, promising weekly writing prompts. This interested me quite a bit, and so I took a look at the account and saw that its main presence is here on Substack (you can check out the thing here).
I shared quite a bit of writing on those prompts, until they ended in February of this year. After that I went dormant for quite a while.
Recently though I revisited the idea of sharing my writings as well as sharing other thoughts that come into my head that can’t really be expressed in a tweet, or on other forms of social media, which place more emphasis on sharing life experiences. Also, if I just leave things to fester in my mind, it gets cluttered, and then I ended up being overwhelmed with ideas. So, here we are!1
Why the Autistic Muse?
Let’s break this down into its components:
The “autistic” part. This part is easier to explain than the muse part, as I am on the autistic spectrum2.
The “muse” part. To quote Merriam-Webster, to muse is
to be absorbed in thought
or, if we treat muse as a noun,
a state of deep thought or dreamy abstraction.
Often times when I think of things, I will end up getting into the really fine details of things, and as a consequence, I might lose track of the bigger picture. This happens all the time in my life. A notable example would be, for instance, researching how to get a visa in order to apply to Cambridge University3.
That being said, this sort of thing can be useful for analysis of various things, and it gives a bit of a unique style to my creative writing. Hence, the “muse”.
Putting it together, the name makes sense.
So, what am I going to post here?
There are a few things that I plan to post, namely:
Thoughts that go through my head as a result of things that interest me, such as the climate crisis, issues on accessibility, etc.
Fiction writing (poetry mostly, but I do have a novel that I wrote a couple of years that hasn’t seen the light of day yet, for the most part)
Music stuff (mostly reviews of albums and concerts, but there might be some surprises here)
and maybe some other miscellaneous things
Sounds interesting! How do I stay in touch?
Feel free to subscribe - it is free, and all content will remain free.
That’s all for now - more content to come soon.
I originally intended to just say, “because I’m here, roll the bones” as the answer to this question, as a Rush reference.
My official diagnosis is Asperger’s Syndrome. This has been deprecated in diagnostic books in favor of just Autism Level 1, however, at the time I was diagnosed this was still a thing.
Yes, this was actually a thought back about 10 years ago when I was applying for colleges. Maybe I will post about this experience later. Long story short, I never applied for that university.
